He is the son of late Jibeswar Sonowal and late Dineswari Sonowal. He completed his schooling at Don Bosco High School in Dibrugarh and pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English from Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi College under Dibrugarh University. He further earned a law degree (LLB) and a Bachelor of Communication and Journalism (B.C.J.) from Gauhati University.
